OVERVIEW: Polyurethanes were developed by Otto Bayer in Germany in 1960 while he was searching for a nylon substitute. Since then polyurethanes have grown into one of the most widely used elastomers in the world. The popularity of urethanes is a result of their superior physical properties and the myriad of processing and formulating diversity. Polyurethane can be molded into solid elastomers, flexible foam, rigid foam or coatings in a wide range of densities and hardness. Literally thousands of formulations are possible.
